Spider-man: Are superheroes losing their edge?

Spider-man: Are superheroes losing their edge?

Characters with incredible powers have been flying or racing to the rescue of mankind since the Thirties, says Tim Martin, but they face a tougher challenge battling to evolve and stay relevant for a tech-savvy 21st-century audience

Mark Ruffalo's new look of the Hulk in The Avengers.

It is not too far-fetched to predict,” remarked Superman’s co-creator Joe Shuster in the first issue of the comic named after him, “that some day our very own plane may be peopled entirely by SUPERMEN!”
Seventy-three years later, anyone who has visited a multiplex cinema, browsed in a toyshop or read the culture section of a newspaper may well respond with a hollow laugh to this prophecy from 1939. It’s been years now since the original superheroes leapt in a single bound from their two dimensional comics ghetto. Today, they flex and grimace in the dead centre of popular entertainment: on the big screen, on the small screen, on your Xbox, on your bookshelves, everywhere.
As flies to wanton boys are global box office records to these spandex demigods. This summer alone, Joss Whedon’s Avengers Assemble has swallowed £906 million in cinema ticket sales in only two months, becoming the third-highest grossing film of all time. Commercial anticipation is already high for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, the final instalment in his Batman trilogy, poised to swoop on leathern wings into the final week of July.
And this month, somewhat in the shadow of those two titans, comes The Amazing Spider-Man, which reboots the story of one of the superhero pantheon’s most durable heroes on the 50th anniversary of his creation, but which has a bare fortnight to claim the attention of audiences before Batman returns.
But wait a minute, even the most dedicated superjunkie might ask: surely we’ve been here before? After all, it’s only five years since the veteran director Sam Raimi concluded his own trilogy of Spider-Man films, while less than a decade divided the final episode in Joel Schumacher’s woeful, high-camp Batman series from Nolan’s grim, terror-age reinterpretation in 2005. The unfortunate Hulk, meanwhile, suffered two equally underwhelming cinematic resets in 2003 and 2008 before finding his feet in the Avengers film.

Who needs a man? Katie Holmes looks stunning as she steps out for dinner in Manhattan

Tom Cruise's new ex takes the town by storm in sleek leather pants and a fitted blazer. The evening excursion followed a day at the zoo with daughter Suri Cruise.

Newly single Katie Holmes dropped her dull daytime duds in exchange for a pair of sleek leather pants and a fitted blazer Wednesday night, as she stepped out for dinner in downtown Manhattan.
The 33-year-old actress managed a smile for the paparazzi as she made her way to The Lion, a restaurant in the West Village, surrounded by bodyguards.

It appears Holmes' split from superstar hubby Tom Cruise hasn't put a damper on her sense of style.
The former "Dawson's Creek" star reportedly blindsided the actor when she filed for divorce two weeks ago, while Cruise, 50, was on set filming his latest movie in Iceland.
Earlier Wednesday, Holmes was spotted with the couple's 6-year-old daughter Suri at the Central Park Zoo. Also along for the outing was Holmes' mother, Kathleen Holmes.
Wearing a white blouse and jeans, Holmes shielded Suri from the shutterbugs by carrying her through the park.

The mom and daughter were all smiles as they pointed at swimming penguins and petted sheep.
In a whirlwind divorce settlement last weekend, Holmes won primary physical custody of Suri. Cruise will receive significant custodial time, TMZ.com reported.
The couple released a statement saying they are "committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri's best interests."
Holmes reportedly used a disposable cell phone to plot her divorce and secured a secret apartment in Chelsea without tipping off her husband.

Scientology, the religion of which Cruise is a well-known adherent, is rumored to be the reason for the split.

Joel McHale and Rob Riggle pulled a literal see-saw at the ESPY’s. The two bounced up and down several times before stepping off the imagined playground equipment.

There was no category for karate at last night’s ESPY Awards, but omedian Rob Riggle and Community star Joel McHale would probably have taken home gold for performing a handshake as complicated as a Japanese kata .
Ostensibly appearing to announce the presenter for “Best Game,” Riggle called McHale, who also hosts E’s The Soup , to the stage and wentfa handshake
That’s when the two started making waves.
What began as an extended expression of bromance quickly lengthened into a 360-degree walk-around with hands outstretched. The presenters then bowed down to grab each other’s outstretched ankles, remaining in  elevated downward dog just long enough for things to get awkward.

Each of the Grammy-winning singer’s three albums has gone platinum at least four times, and the “You Belong With Me” singer rakes in $1 million per concert on top of her lucrative CoverGirl cosmetics contract, Forbes said.
Bieber, 18, snagged second place with $55 million earned from music sales, sold-out concerts and endorsements for products like the skincare line Proactiv.
The Canadian crooner, whose video for the breakout ballad “Baby” is the second most watched on YouTube, also boasts an enviable investment portfolio with stakes in the popular start-up companies Tinychat and Spotify, Forbes said.

Rihanna, 24, edged out last year’s first place winner Lady Gaga, 26, for third place with $53 million.
The Barbados-born singer earned her impressive haul from her recent “Talk That Talk” album, an 85-night concert tour and endorsement deals with Vita Coco coconut water and Nivea lotion.
Gaga dropped to fourth place this year because the list’s May deadline hit before she embarked on her latest world tour, Forbes said.
The “Poker Face” singer earned an estimated $52 million, down from $90 million a year earlier.
Singers Katy Perry, 27, and Adele, 24, came in fifth and sixth with estimated earnings of $45 million and $35 million respectively.

“Twilight” actress Kristen Stewart, rapper Lil Wayne and “Twilight” actors Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattison rounded out the list with earnings between $26.5 million and $34.5 million.
“We’re seeing this confluence of talented young female stars. They have such distinct personalities and sounds, they can all co-exist without cannibalizing each other,” list author Dorothy Pomerantz told the Daily News.
Pomerantz said Swift embodies “youth, innocence and the struggle of being a teen” while Rihanna is the “edgy bad girl” and Adele is all about stripped-down “heartfelt” vocals.

She said young female singers also tend to benefit from bigger endorsement contracts in the areas of beauty, health and fashion.
This year’s list did not include athletes as it has in the past.
“Athletes are at the height of their career when they’re under 30, so they tend to earn a lot more,” Pomerantz said. “We do a lot of athlete lists, so we wanted this list to focus on Hollywood and entertainment.”

Tom Cruise's lawyers have threatened to sue the parent company of the National Enquirer over its latest issue claiming to have intimate details of the actor's recent split with Katie Holmes, according to reports in the US.
The cover of the June 11, 2012 of the National Enquirer breaking the Tom Cruise story
The Hollywood Reporter posted a letter on its website from Cruise's Los Angeles lawyer, Bert Fields, in which he lambasts American Media Inc, parent of the Enquirer, for what he calls "false and vicious lies" he says will cause "hundreds of millions of dollars" in damages to Cruise.
"As you were notified in advance, your current issue of National Enquirer makes numerous false and defamatory assertions about our client Tom Cruise," the three-page letter begins.
The letter draws attention to disparaging descriptions of Cruise in the Enquirer's issue that hit news-stands on Wednesday, with Fields writing, "These are all lies – vicious, hurtful, damaging lies."
Mr Fields did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment late on Wednesday and a representative for American Media could not be reached.
Cruise and Holmes have been the subject of hundreds of headlines worldwide since she filed for divorce from the "Mission: Impossible" movie star two weeks ago, seeking sole custody of their six-year-old daughter, Suri.

Mark Wahlberg: 'Ted is going to offend more people than Family Guy'

Mark Wahlberg: 'Ted is going to offend more people than Family Guy

American actor Mark Wahlberg is used to playing hard men, but has turned to comedy for new film Ted, finds Will Lawrence.

Mark Wahlberg with his furry best friend in 'Ted'.

Mark Wahlberg, the star of Boogie Nights and The Fighter, might have cleaned up his act – the drugs, violence and the spell in prison are now just distant memories – but the 41-year-old reformed bad boy still flirts with trouble on occasion.
He cites a recent example, involving his wife, former model Rhea Durham, two of their four children and the TV cartoon series Family Guy.
“Now, I had never seen Family Guy,” begins Wahlberg, “but I had figured as it was a cartoon that I could sit down and watch it with my two eldest kids; the oldest is eight.” He figured wrong. “We watched the 150th episode.” Oh dear.
In this particular episode, two of the main characters, Stewie, a talking baby, and Brian, a talking dog, get locked in a bank vault and things get out of hand.
“The baby is locked in with the dog; the dog eats poo out of the baby’s diaper; then they are drinking alcohol; then they get this gun out of a safety deposit box... All this crazy stuff is going on and my wife comes barging in from the other room because she hears all this laughter and she immediately turns the TV off and yells at me for letting the kids watch it.”
